Gel Cell Smart Charger for 6 volt SD/GP Minelab Batteries

NEVER NEVER NEVER use the Minelab supplied AC home charger to charge your Sealed Gel Cell Lead Acid Batteries that come in 6V 12ah and 6V 7ah variations.

The AC charger supplied by Minelab has no safety circuit built in to turn off when your battery is fully charged.  I personally experience an incident in which I forgot the battery was charging.  I left it plugged in for 3 days.  I noticed what smelled like sewage or Sulphur.  I finally discovered the battery which was extremely hot, and had swollen to about 125% of it’s size because the plastic was softened from the heat.  Gel acid had leaked all over the table.  That was the day I threw away the Minelab supplied charger and started looking for a safe alternative.

Lert me say this, the Minelab supplied CAR CHARGER is perfectly safe, it has an overcharge protection circuit in it.  If you want to use the car charger but want to use it in your home you can get an AC to DC converter and just plug your car charger into it, it’s a great alternative to have a separate home charger.

This charger that Doc sells is very safe to use.  It monitors when your battery is fully charged and then turns off and goes into monitoring mode.  If your battery drains a bit, it turns back on to top it off then goes back into monitoring mode.  Your battery will always be fully charged and ready to go.

What we have come to notice is that by eliminating the big curly power cord and using a little short cord that is hard wired into the Gold Screamer with the other end having the 5 or 4 pin plug that attaches to your control box, all of a sudden these machines are running smoother.

Now along with the fact that you are getting rid of the curly cord, and the problem with getting caught on branches, we are speculating that perhaps some of the EMI has been caused by the big curly cord.

We know connection points are a weak chain in the link and they can cause interference, so the fewer the better. The curly power cord has two connectors, and if you were attempting to use an amplifier that meant even more connection points. With the GOLD SCREAMER POWER PACK there is one connector, the one that plugs into the detector. You have the power to run your detector, and massive amplification to hear even the faintest targets.  The volume control amplifies up to 500% of what you would hear without it.  Way too much for headphones so start off with the volume control around 25% of the full rotation.  When you use a speaker you will need the extra power to drive the speaker.

Making the detector run smoother was simply an unexpected benefit. The real benefit is the reduced weight, and the freedom of not being hooked up to your detector with a curly cord.

One Minelab Lithium Ion battery costs $450, and the amplification from the Minelab battery is good, but it may not be enough for people with hearing impairment. The 6 volt 12 amp hour battery will give you around 14 hours of runtime, depending upon the size coil and whether you are using an amplifier and speaker.

These batteries are suitable for the Minelab SD2000, SD2100, SD2200, GP series including the GP Extreme, the GP3000 and the GP3500.

Be extremely careful about purchasing these over the internet as you never know whether they are new or old.

All of Doc’s batteries are fresh and brand new.  We actually build these batteries as they are ordered and each one is checked to make sure it is giving top performance.  We have our manufacturing facility form the dome top and then the top is wired with the best components available.

As you probably know these 6 volt 12 amp hour batteries are heavy, 5 pounds!

Because of this we also offer a 6 volt 7 amp hour battery that will give you about 8 hours run time.  These way only about 3 lbs.  This is plenty of run time for the average detectorist.  If you have a bad back, and have two of these lighter weight batteries, if you need to detect longer than 8 hours you will have a backup.
