Up until now, there has always been a compromise between frequency and sensitivity when optimising detector performance, because lower frequencies are more sensitive to larger gold nuggets and higher frequencies are more sensitive to smaller gold nuggets.

When comparing detectors, the three curves in the diagram represent each detector’s ability to find small gold nuggets of a certain size, at a maximum possible depth. Most detectors will find a very large nugget just beneath the surface, however a detector’s sensitivity to gold determines how many smaller nuggets will ultimately be recovered in difficult (noisy) ground at greater depths.

An 18 kHz detector will normally have a depth advantage on nuggets ≥ 1.0g over a basic mid-frequency detector, and a 71 kHz detector will have a depth advantage on nuggets ≤ 0.1g. The advanced GOLD MONSTER 1000 uses an intermediate 45 kHz frequency AND a high speed 24-bit signal processor. This primary combination greatly boosts sensitivity to gold beyond that of other single frequency VLF detectors over a wide range of nugget sizes, without introducing excess noise and false signals.

The GOLD MONSTER 1000 also has improved ferrous/non-ferrous discrimination and copes better with conductive (salty) soils than higher frequency detectors, making it the perfect choice to maximise your gold recovery!

Audio Discrimination

When prospecting the golden rule is to dig all solid signals. However, the type of target under the coil and buried beneath the ground can be distinguished by the audio response the detector sounds.

The GPZ 7000 gold detector audio response provides discrimination in the form of pitch and tone when the coil passes over ferrous or non-ferrous targets, similarly with amplitude and duration for shallow and deep targets.

For example, the audio response for small gold will be a low-pitched tone followed by a high-pitched tone. A ferrous signal such as a bottle cap will produce a high-pitched tone followed by a low-pitched one, enabling the user to discriminate the ferrous target.

A louder, shorter sound will indicate a shallow target while a quieter, broader sound will indicate the presence of a deep, large target. A target that sounds off multiple times each swing will invariably be a near-surface or surface target.

Deeper Detection (average 30%*)

Larger coils typically detect deeper than smaller coils of the same configuration. Minelab field test results, in both low and high mineralised ground, using a range of natural gold nuggets, give an average 30%* detection depth increase when measuring performance of the extra large GPZ 19 coil compared to the standard GPZ 14 coil. With nugget sizes of 10g and below, the GPZ 7000 High Yield Gold Mode gave superior in-ground results. As the selected nugget size increased above 20g, switching into GPZ 7000 General Gold Mode provided an additional depth increase over High Yield.

Detector Depth & Coil Size Comparison

Detection depth and gold sensitivity depends upon the detector technology, the coil size and the configuration. Increasing the coil size on a GPX Series detector (from Commander 11″ to 15″×12″ to 18″) will give a measurable depth improvement. Increasing the coil size on a GPZ 7000 from GPZ 14 to GPZ 19 will also give a significant improvement.

* In iron mineralised ground, a GPZ 7000 detector with a GPZ 19 coil will achieve much better results than a GPX Series detector with any size Commander coil. In very salty ground the GPZ 14 coil may give better results than the GPZ 19 coil.

Multiple Panning Zones for Maximum Gold Recovery

It’s like having three gold pans in one! There is a standard smooth sidewall, PLUS coarse and fine sidewall riffles (15-inch pan) to catch all sizes of alluvial gold particles efficiently so you don’t miss any. The coarse riffles easily trap the larger gold nuggets to help you quickly discard unwanted gravel, whilst the fine riffles capture the tiny gold specks – this can add up to big gold fast!

Large 90° Riffles Mini Riffles Flat Sidewall

Large 90° Riffles – Large 90° riffles on the 15-inch and 10-inch pans catch larger gold grains before they wash away. This is a good initial step to separate the black sand and gold from lighter colored sediments.

Mini Riffles – Mini riffles on the 15-inch pan assist in trapping very tiny gold in fine black sand, allowing the sand to wash away leaving the gold behind.

High Contrast Blue for Optimum Gold Visibility

Opposing points on the color wheel have high color contrast. In the diagram, yellow (A) and blue (B) have high contrast.

This is why a blue pan will help you to see gold more easily than all other colors. Black may seem like a good choice, but it will camouflage the black sand that is commonly found with alluvial gold.

Adjacent colors on the color wheel have low  contrast, so orange or green would not be a good choice of color for gold visibility.
